The majority of the population in rural areas use the beach for defecation.
Flush toilets are used mostly in urban areas but a high proportion of the population in urban areas still use the beach and the bush.
The majority of well water in urban areas is not safe for drinking and needs to be boiled before consumption.
Defecation at the beach and in the bush increases the spread of water borne diseases especially diarrhoeal diseases among children. This results in high infant and child morbidity and mortality rates, damage to the environment and a deterrent to tourism.
It is estimated that 30% of the sanitation systems are not functioning well because of widespread tampering of the water system by private households and the apparent lack of enforcement and maintenance by the responsible ministry.
